Sarah began her architecture solo practice in this Berkeley Victorian while raising it 2’ higher, inserting a new foundation and new living space below, renovating and restoring it top to bottom. The project includes many environmentally conscious features such as high volume fly ash concrete, blown-in cellulose insulation, dual flush toilets, energy efficient appliances and heating system, locally crafted light fixtures, windows, and countertops, 50-year roofing, zero voc and low voc paints and finishes, low maintenance and durable siding, salvaged materials, (including extensive reuse of wood, recycling of the foundation slab for garden walls, and aluminum salvaged from sailboat roller furler track,) Marmoleum flooring, drip irrigation, and more.
